Really Useful Guns

Artillery Models (15mm-20mm)
Available from Australia

by Malcolm Wright

The guns are made in a scale halfway between 15mm and 20mm because I noticed that the products of various manufacturers varied wildly from one to the other and scale was therefore a bit contentious. I noticed that some 20mm guns and some 15mm guns looked OK depending on which figures were placed with them. In other words, that the eye of the wargamer perceived them on the scale of the artillerymen and if it looked OK, then they accepted it. With that in mind I realised that with the rather larger 15mm of today and the 20mm, you could make an artillery model that looked OK with either, making them "very useful".

In addition I noted that many component parts of guns were very similar (and again varied widely from one manufacturer to the other) so I reasoned that if some components could be made 'common' to several weapons, it would make it feasible for a manufacturer to produce a large number of guns.....something most had always claimed was too costly. In the first three batches therefore, I spent a considerable time researching which shields looked very similar, which trails, which barrels etc. The guns based around KRUPP designs were numerous and the easiest, because they simply were so similar....having come from a common base. Often the alterations were only in designation number! Particularly with the 7.5cm guns of the turn of the century up to WW1.

The RUG range was born early last year and has been a success. Irregulars took on the manufacture and distribution and now own the rights for the UK , Europe, Australasia and Asia. Unfortunately no one has yet taken on the rights for the USA but wargamers from there have been purchasing them from Irregulars or from Eureka. As you can see the RUG range has grown very large and Irregulars designer Ian Kay has been putting out Artillery crew especially to match them.
