President's Message

Hurricon 97 is now behind us. It seemed like a huge weight was lifted from our shoulders until I realized that RECON 98 is just around the corner. Places to go; people to meet; things to do.

In reality this should not be such a giant weight on anyone's shoulders. As the old quaker expression says, "many hands make light work". Those quakers know a thing or two about team work.

Show coordinator Craig Martelle bore the brunt of the duties and deserves the most praise, but was complemented by a good team of hard workers. Rhett Scott and Dale Marcum were right there when things needed to get done. Jeff Lista coordinated with national-level dealers to obtain prize donations. We couldn't have run the front desk without Jennifer Villalta, her mother Donna, and Dave Neal. I know I am leaving out some people and don't mean to. Special thanks to Chuck Holabird who worked with the manual labor side of getting the game room put together. The arrangement was perfect.

After the convention the board of directors had a debriefing. Although the convention was over, two tables of gamers were still slugging it out. During our after action meeting, several items came to light. The convention was top heavy with out of town gamers. We took for granted the local advertising and it showed. That won't happen again. The Flea Market opened early causing a mad rush for the early vendors. Those that got there on time were at a disadvantage. That won't happen again either. Generally the positive vastly outnumbered the negative. All glitches were handled. My phone has rung regularly with folks telling me we did a good job and they are glad to see gaming back in Florida to stay.

On the plus side the convention was well organized and grew by over 30% from last year. Things got where they needed to go when they needed to be there. Items such as certificates, supplies, and empty tables were all well coordinated. There were games aplenty. Even cancelled games were replaced with quality games. Everyone had a game to play with enough variety to make the convention worth while. The overall consensus was that the interest and organization was there for the April show.

Our task now turns to continuing the process of organizing Historical Gamers throughout the state and inviting regional gamers to participate with us at what will be bigger and bigger shows. There are many jobs needing to be done. All we need is your help and you can see the results.
