A Napoleons Battles
Campaign Module for use
with Napoleon at Bay

Introduction

The Napoleon at Bay game system simulates the campaign of 1814 in Eastern France on an operational level. Each turn of Napoleon at Bay represents approximately one to two days, and each hex is two miles across.. This makes Napoleon at Bay a very good vehicle for a miniatures campaign system. The emphasis of Napoleon at Bay on command structures makes it very easy for the system to be covered for use with the Napoleons Battles miniatures rules. For this to work properly a system of linking the two games is required. What follows are a few guide-lines for linking Napoleon at Bay with Napoleons Battles.

Organization of Units

Each combat unit in Napoleon at Bay represents a Division or Brigade level unit and has a general assigned to it. The detailed orders of battle provided with this module show both how many and which types of Napoleons Battles combat units are in the Division/Brigade.

The Order of Battle of the 1814 campaign in Eastern France can be found in Appendix I. It shows the French and Allied units of 1814. Appendix I also shows the artillery assets available to the two armies and can be used for the Campaign Game.

To use Napoleon at Bay as a miniatures campaigning system set up the units on the Organizational Display Charts as you would if you were going to play a straight Napoleon at Bay game. In general, campaign losses will be removed from the Organizational Display.

In the event of a miniatures battle the players will need to convert the strengths of the units on the Organizational Display into Napoleons Battles units. The 1814 Order of Battle provides guidelines for the composition of each unit. It is recommended that these guidelines be followed wherever possible. However where a units strength has significantly risen or fallen players should be able to adjust the exact composition of a unit to more closely match its overall strength.

Combat Phase

To facilitate miniatures battles the Combat Phase has been altered to include an alternative to the standard Combat Routine surprisingly enough called the Alternative Combat Routine.

This Alternative Combat Routine should only be used when there is a possibility that the players will fight a miniatures battle.

General Rules & Sequence for the Alternative Combat Routine

Combat Routine – Odds Determination – Prepare for any Action – Fight the Battle – Pursuit & Post Battle Events – Disorganization & Rally

Each side reveals how many strength points it has.

A decision is made on whether a miniatures battle will be fought, or if the standard Napoleon at Bay combat system will be used ( page 22).

Remember at least one battle per Game Turn must be fought using miniatures.

The exact forces for the battle are determined with reference to the unit lists and the Organizational Display.

The Organizational Display will tell the players the strength and identity of every combat unit involved.

The Unit lists will tell the player what the composition of each unit is in terms of Napoleons Battles combat units. Each player should then adjust the unit list to reflect any changes in the units overall strength since the start of the campaign. Infantry units with only one strength point should be represented as 16 figure combat unit with 3 pre existing casualties.

The terrain is determined with reference to the map. A line 2 hexes wide by 3 hexes long represents a standard 9' by 5' table.

Game starting time and arrival times for each unit are calculated with reference to the Arrival Table.

Once a side has decided to retreat or is compelled to rout, the length of the retreat is determined with reference to the Retreat Length Table.

Battle casualties are recovered by both sides.

  1. The side left holding the field recovers 1/2 of all combat casualties.
  2. The side that has abandoned the battlefield recovers 1/3 of all combat casualties

Disorganization is determined for the retreating force.

  1. If the retreating force was "broken" in the battle it is considered to be disorganized.
  2. If the retreating force was not "broken" in the battle follow the standard Napoleon at Bay rules governing disorganization after retreat.

Forces that became disorganized in previous combat phases may now attempt to rally.

How to use the Arrival Table.

The number of movement points expended by each unit in getting to a battle field will determine what time of day it arrives.

Procedure

Cross reference the number of movement points expended with the troop type to find the time of arrival on the battlefield hex of each individual force. Each individual force moves at the speed of its slowest unit.

Arrival

When a force is due to arrive it must arrive in the part of the battlefield that represents the hex it has moved to on the Napoleon at Bay map.

Arriving forces appear in march column on the road they traveled on, if applicable.

However players may delay their arrival by using Napoleons Battles Scenario Book rule 1.5.2. Which means they may wait two turns and arrive fully deployed.

Using the Retreat Length Table

A force that retreats from the battlefield must determine the length of its retreat in terms Of Napoleon at Bay hexes.

Procedure

Find out the total number of battle turns that were completed before the force retreated on the Retreat Length Table. The number of turns the battle has lasted will correspond with a number that indicates how many hexes the force must retreat. This number is modified by the Retreat Length Modifiers (see below)

Retreat Length Modifiers

    For each turn after 5:30 PM: -1 hex
    If the retreating force left the battlefield is unbroken: -1
    If the current weather is mud: -1 hex
    If the current weather is rain or snow: -2 hexes

Pursuit

Once the losers retreat length is determined the winners must determine their pursuit length. This is done by using the standard Napoleon at Bay pursuit rules ( Napoleon at Bay Rules Folder page 24) and halving the number of strength points lost ( round fractions up).

Casualties suffered during pursuit are additional to those suffered in the miniatures battle.

Appendix I: 1814 Orders of Battle
How to Use the Orders of Battle

The Orders of Battle that follow are a guide to the unit composition for the 1814 Campaign. These orders of battle are divided into two sections. These are Corps & Higher Commands and Divisions, Brigades & Cavalry Corps.

Corps & Higher Commands

These show the names and Napoleons Battles leadership ratings of the senior corps and wing commanders. Formations with a W after their title are considered to be "Wing" commanders for Napoleons Battles puirposes. The artillery assets for each formation may be reassigned to any unit within the formations chain of command. These artillery assets do not in any way impede the movement of the formation or leader that they are attached to.

Divisions, Brigades & Cavalry Corps

These show athe actual composition of each combat unit in each Napoleon at Bay combat unit. Units are described in terms of their type and their strength. Note that strengths are indicated in terms of a number of stands. Each stand represents 4 Napoleons Battles miniatures.

Note: Some divisions have been modified to include integral cavalry units. These divisions are;

Crenneville(Austrian), Rechberg, Bekers and La Motte (Bavarian) and Zielinsky (Prussian).

These divisions should for all intents and purposes be treated as ordinary infantry divisions except when determining units for a miniatures game, when the actual composition of each division should be reflected. Visibility and Weather Effects

The Standard Napoleons Battles rules on visibility and weather will apply for this campaigne with the following modifications:

  1. Units that are not visible to the enemy will be represented by counters. Each counter be placed on the table in the position that would be occupied by the brigade and will provide information on the brigades type and formation. this information will not be available to the enemy until the unit is within visibility range.
  1. Heavy Rain - During a battle held on a day of rain weather the normal effects of rain will apply for all units to currently occupiying buildings. In addition to this each turn there will be a 1 in 5 chance of a downpour. The effects of are downpour are as follows;
  • All infantry outside of buildings may not fire at all..
  • Artillery have their fire factor reduced by one.
