Web Review: MagWeb

Historical and
Wargame Magazines Online

by Craig Martelle

Some may say that knowledge is power. Other's live by that premise. MAGWEB gives you 20 different magazines in a convenient online package. A subscription costs $9.95 for a month or $59.95 for one year. Most of your favorite 'zines are there, to include The Courier, Zouave, Competitive Edge, Heliograph, MWAN, 4 different Napolonics mags, Chainmail, etc. Even HMGS Mid-South will be posting their quarterly newsletter there.

MAGWEB has a lot going it for it. Foremost, the CEO of MAGWEB is Russ Lockwood who has been reviewing gaming and history magazines for more than a decade. He is well-qualified to provide the gaming community with this service. MAGWEB, in its infancy, has posted a wide variety of magazines in order to appeal to any and all gaming interests. The magazines on MAGWEB cover all facets of the gaming community. Shadis, Chainmail, and Renaissance Ink are dedicated to Sci Fi / Fantasy, the others are nearly all historical.

One drawback is that few archive copies of the magazines are available online. MAGWEB has the contracts to post them, but scanning and coding is a time-consuming process. Consider this a positive. Log in each week and peruse the 'new' copies of old magazines as they are posted. There's always something new to read and there's something for everyone. The average internet user currently operates with a 14.4 modem. In order to accomodate these individuals, each page on MAGWEB is small and takes less than a minute to download at the slower speeds. For those of us with faster access, browsing the site is quick and effortless.

You'll find the search feature most accomodating and as older issues are posted, the search feature becomes that much more potent. At last check, a keyword search on "Gettysburg" yielded 66 articles. The best news is that for less than $60 you have legal access to about $450 worth of subscriptions. At this point I must admit that I am doing some HTML coding for MAGWEB, as well as getting published in a variety of magazines. Is my viewpoint skewed? Absolutely! If you can find more for less, then let me know. I've searched and this is bar none, the best value for your wargaming dollar. That's why it was so easy for me to jump on board with Russ and the rest of the crew from New Jersey.

MAGWEB has the free browsing section at the main page. Stop by and take a look. I think you'll be impressed with what you see. Here's the particulars. www.magweb.com e-mail: magweb@magweb.com payment: SSL encoding to guarantee security when paying online by credit card.
