Hurricon and the Hurricane

2004

by Pat Condray

We’ve been there before. Back in 1998 Duke Seifried entertained not only the HMGS SOUTH faithful, but a number of refugees from Hurricane Georges. This time when we went to Tampa and played in Chuck’s Challenge Hurricane Jeanne was safely off in the Atlantic not bothering us. But after a pirouette she took aim and headed straight for Tampa.

By Friday evening even hard core gamers were having second thoughts. Our convention director (right) got up and made a short speech rallying the troops. No blame could attach to those compelled to head home and batten down the hatches in the path of the storm. But as for the convention, the games would go on through Sunday as long as anyone was present. And so they did!

Left: Chuck Rallies the Troops-Friday Night at HURRICON 04
Right: So we took a hit. But the place was not exactly deserted.

There were games cancelled. We probably lost as many Friday arrivals Saturday morning as we gained in Saturday arrivals. My SCW epic, and Frank Frey’s s Austro-Prussian epic that followed got no takers, and several tables on the north side of the Coral Ballroom were empty in prime time. But there were games all the way through Sunday. Not only did we keep things going for ourselves, we finally got proper press recognition.

The St. Pete Times ran a lengthy article titled “WEE WARFARE” in the Floridian covering the convention on the 5th of October. Admittedly the author, Chris Sherman made much of our rapprochement with the dark side. But wait-he says Condray goes over to the dark side occasionally! I’ll sue-I’ll demand a retraction! Dark side? Moi? Who told him that? But at least there is no National BOD, so we don’t have to worry about the 10% rule.
