Recon 04:
Slightly Fewer Gamers, More Games

Editorial

by Pat Condray

In spite of higher than ever pre-registrations, RECON 04 was down about 9% from last year’s 413 (down to 379.) Traditionally we’ve had a higher ratio of games to gamers at HURRICON than RECON. This time RECON looked a bit more like HURRICON in that regard. Our games started the day before the convention (see Chuck’s Challenge) and spilled over into the Atrium more than ever. Not only the big game (Bill Moreno’s VICKSBURG saga) but several other games were going on there in most sessions.

The high game loading had an unusual effect. I don’t play competitively much in my dotage, but I wound up in two games. Chuck’s Challenge, and my own Oudenarde Game. My last previous game had been over a year ago, a game of little green army men in which I was defeated by my youngest grandson. As Phil Barker is wont to say “Never roll dice against women and children.” Wise advice. I really enjoyed RECON 04 gaming-and, since I wasn’t rolling against women or children, I wound up on the victorious sides.

Another novelty-Rudy Nelson and I were presented with Bonnie Blue Flag Awards for service to the hobby and HMGS SOUTH (see page 8.) Our thanks to Chuck and the rest of the BOD for this generous gesture. Both of us will try to keep up the good work.

All we have to do now is get going on HURRICON 04. Let’s get some more gamers in there! Even if it means I only get into one game.
