The Best Hurricon Yet!

2003 Convention Report

by Pat Condray

Generally over the years RECON attendance has run ahead of HURRICON attendance, but for some reason we often list more games for the latter convention.

Saturday Morning-Look Past the Warlord Game and it's Wall to Wall Gaming

Last year, for example, a forced relocation among other problems, reduced our space and attendance for HURRICON 02. But we had around 140 events listed. It was a great convention--but drew fewer than 300 attended. RECON 04 went up to 413, with a full slate of games. True to form HURRICON 03 held slightly fewer--391 reported from the front desk. but that is still up over 100 from last year, and, in fact, is the highest ever for HURRICON.

As usual, perhaps more so, we had a great slate of games. Larry Brom unexpectedly was unable to attend. But Mark Stevens and Jay Striblin carried the load. And the Jacksonville Garrison came through with a full slate of games. Marty Sauls and friends kept a table going the whole convention with Reasonable Fury and Clash. And Bob Moon offered two sessions of spectacular ACW action. At times Jacksonville had three tables going at once. In fact, overall there were so many spectacular games that several were moved to the Atrium to have enough space.

Three special notes on the Jacksonville Garrison: I found that past club lists lacked that active group, so I have added their President and POC Edgar Pabon (e-mail: espabon@hotmail.com) to our club lists. Second, I found that they have quarterly minicons at BORDERLANDS Hobby Shop in Jacksonville. Third, I found that belated congratulations are due Bob Moon. His Gettysburg game ranked second of 167 at LITTLE WARS last Spring in Chicago. His Manassas games at HURRICON 03 were also impressive.

We did miss, in addition to Larry Brom, the familiar ARMATI Tournament. Apparently limiting the scope to the "Rise of Cavalry" era eliminated too many contestants. Downing is looking at an "Open" tournament to get back on track for CON 04.

Alternative gaming came up sharpl~ y. The RTT drew more players than ever and both the Lakeland Role Playing Guild and Russell Grieshop's Board Gamer's Corner increased. Chuck moved the former to Cypress, and the latter got all three of the small meeting rooms.

These areas were full and active the whole convention. Articles from both sources are in this issue.

We now have a great new web page (check it out at http://hm2s-south.com) from Gregg Lukomski, a newsletter, and a lot of momentum. RECON 04 will be better than ever.
