The Allan Redmond
Memorial DBA Tournament

HMGS South's Hurricon Game Convention
September 27th 2003

by Martin Schmidt, NASAMW Deep South DBA Regional Umpire

On June 1, 2003, Allan Redmond passed away in his sleep at his home in Vero Beach Florida. He was only 42 years old and it came as quite a shock to the local gaming community. Allan was always willing to play any game and was always gracious whether he won or lost.

Bruce Boyd IV squares off against Marv Schmid as Bruce Boyd IV and Mary Schmid look on.

With the consent and approval of his family, it was decided to dedicate the DBA tournament at Hurricon '03 to his memory. Allan had become a regular in the local DBA events and had in fact played in the last tournament the previous April. NASAMW Deep South runs an Open format at Recon in April and a Theme event at Hurricon in September. Allan had played a Graeco-Bactrian army and commented during the event that the 'Classical period' was one of his favorites. By acclaim, the themeevent became the ancient world of Carthage, Greece and Rome. The list of permitted armies ran from the Peloponnesian Wars in 431 BC to the end of the Third Punic War in 146 BC.

The standard NASAMW NICT format was used with the eight participants divided into two pools of four players each. The pools played three games, 'round robin', with a one-hour time limit per game. The top two of each pool advanced to a single elimination playoff bracket to decide the champion.

The latest rules updates were used (De Bellis Antiquitatis v 2.1) and things ran very smoothly after the first round of play.

The participants and their armies were:

Group One

Stephen Quintero II/33 Polybian Romans
Robert Freeman II/32 Later Carthaginian
Bruce Boyd IV II/19 Seleucid
Marv Schmid I/48 Thracian

Group Two

Pat Rosato II/10 Camillan Roman
Doug Hawes II/15 Alexandrian Imperial
Pat Kurivial II/11 Gallic
Betsy Schmid II/5 Later Hoplite Greek (Theban)

The tournament also used the new scoring system introduced at Historicon this year.

If the Victory Conditions were achieved, the Winner gets 25 points minus the losing player's points total. The Losing Player gets 1 point for each enemy element killed or fled off board and 2 points extra for killing the enemy General and 2 points extra if the enemy campBUA is taken and occupied at end of game.

If the Victory Conditions were not achieved and time is called, then both players only get the points for each enemy element killed or fled off board and for killing the enemy General or if the enemy campBUA is taken and occupied at end of game.

The two players in each pool with the best Win/Loss record advanced. The Tie Break was: 1) Total Points. 2) Count back (Strength of opponents) 3) Personal combat (Players dice off until one doubles and 'slays' the other.)

Advancing from group one were Stephen Quintero and Bob Freeman and from group two it was Pat Rosato and Doug Hawes. Stephen's Romans defeated Doug's Alexandrians 4-1. Bob's Carthaginians narrowly defeated Pat's Camillans 4-3.

Doug and Pat both received $5 gift certificates from Wargames Inc for making the finals. A fantastic final pitting Rome against Carthage!

Unfortunately, Bob's dice ran out of sixes in this game and Carthage fell 4-1! (He should have been rubbing his lucky charm harder! A 2000-year-old Numidian coin he kept showing off!)

Bob went home with a $10 gift certificate from Wargames Inc and the Runner-Up Plaque Congratulations to our Champion! NASAMW Deep South Member Stephen Quintero of Tallahassee Florida! He went home with a $20 gift certificate from Wargames Inc and the Champions Plaque.

He is now qualified to face the best of the best at the DBA NICT at Historicon 2004.

Allan would be proud of you!
