Larry Brom

Lifetime Achievement Award

by Rhett Scott

Larry Brom and his daughter Lori will be back. Pleased with the welcome he encountered as Guest of Honor at Hurricon, Larry sent out the following note on the 10th of October last year.

Larry Brom receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at HURRICON 02 -- (Don't know who the other guy is) [actually, it's R. Scott--RL]

Subject: AAR - Hurricon 2002, Tampa FL

"As a wargamer of some 49 years and having attended countless gaming conventions in that time, from the small (40 attendees) to the large (3500+ attendees), I must report on what I consider to be a premier convention.

"The weekend of September 27, 28 & 29, I attended HMGS-South's fall convention in Tampa Florida, Hurricon. The facilities were superb, the organizers as helpful and cooperative as any I have seen, and the gaming simply outstanding!

"The attendees were the most amiable gathering of gamers I have ever spent a weekend with, due I am sure, to the spirit of comradeship permeating the whole endeavor by the HMGS-South organizers.

"My daughter Lori (who had a dealer's table) best summed it up with, "They don't take themselves seriously, but they sure take their gaming seriously."

"I am not sure of the total weekend attendance but I conservatively estimated about 275+ gamers. The program listed 112 games, and my favorite, some 9 - 10 Colonial games were played. At last count, I saw 12 dealers, all quality people and products.

"It was, however, the spirit of comradeship that impressed me the most. The weekend seemed as if you were gaming and socializing with long-time friends.

"If your budget and time allows you to only attend one convention next year, make it Hurricon in Tampa. Their Website is: http: //www. hmqssouth. org.

Regards, and Good Gaming!"

Just to make sure

I contacted Larry recently and got the following reply:

"Yes, we will be at RECON; it and HURRICON are now part of our official convention schedule. Mark Stevens and Jay Stribling (original TSATF playtesters) from Jackson, MS are also coming. I will host "800 Fighting Englishmen" a battalion-level variant for TSATF at its first public appearance. Jay and Mark will each be doing a TSATF game(s). Let me know if/what further you need from me.

    Regards ... Larry"

We have also heard from Mark and Jay, who will be running the actual games. Larry is going to play and hang out in a supervisory capacity. I've seen several of their games presented along with Larry, and they are always visually spectacular. One of the games will be Jay's variant "Every Man a Briton," and another a conventional TSATF of the Boer War. So be sure not to miss RECON this year.
