Hurricon 96 Impression

The Eye of the Hurricane

by John Ennis

Hello Gamers, my name is John Ennis. "Hurricon '96 The Eye of The Storm" was my first real experience with this hobby. I've played a few various hobby games in the past (D/D, Human Chess, etc.) But nothing really compares to the games that I was witnessing and actually playing at this, my first conference.

I arrived late, that's not unusual, and was very sorry that I was. I arrived on Saturday and felt cheated after being there only a short time. Chuck was a big help in getting me signed in and ready to game. Introductions were made and the fun began.

I am usually a shy, kind of "stand offish," person due to my profession, but I actually felt relaxed from the start. There wasn't one rude person there, that I could tell. Everyone I talked to was helpful, understanding and willing to go the distance to explain the smallest (if not insignificant) questions that I presented. I knew a couple of people from the Tactical Edge, where I played only one game of Mutineers prior to the convention, but everyone I spoke with seemed like an old friend.

Some of you will say I don't remember every single person, what I do remember was the feeling of being in a room of gamers that were there to play, make new friends and rekindle some old duels across a miniature battle field. I didn't know where to start, Historic, Modern, or Future games. I witnessed a great time being had by all players.

The dealers, as should be, were there to expand player's armies and shrink their bank accounts. It's the American way and it should be as fun as Hurricon '96. I wish to thank anyone and everyone who had anything to do with, no matter what they did, making my first convention possibly my best.
