Review by Rhett Scott
Over the weekend of 12-14 January 2001, I had the pleasure of attending Siege of Augusta. The show was well done and attended by about 120 gamers. While at the show, I was awe struck by a new figure company that attended Siege called Sash and Saber Castings. Sash and Saber is the business name of Chris Hughes, yes that Chris Hughes, the sculptor of so many fine Old Glory 25s including many of my personal favorites in the Pirate range. Chris has embarked on his own figure lines although he is still sculpting full-time for Old Glory. His figures are about 27mm tall and will mix quite well with all of the current industry standard lines. I suspect that once you see these figures, you will simply do away with the old figures and start over with Sash and Saber Castings. As of mid-January, Chris has completed several groups of Union and Confederate ACW, Napoleonic French, Austrian 1809, Russian 1812, and Seven Years War Prussian. All bags are infantry and artillery codes right now, but cavalry and other stuff are on the way. Pricing is very fair. Packs of 10 figures or 2 guns are $12.50; or you can buy Regimental packs and save money. ACW Regimental Packs are 40 figs for $40.00; and Napoleonic or Seven Years War Regimental Packs are 50 figs for $50.00. In the ACW packs and Regimental Packs there are NO duplicate figures at all. A very nice feature in my opinion. In the other ranges the 10 packs are all the same figures except in the command packs where all 10 are unique. However, if you seek variety, the Regimental Packs contain a mix of 40 troops plus the 10 command figs. In fact in the French Regimental Pack you get 10 command, 24 fusiliers and 16 elites. I am enclosing photos of some of Chris' figs both painted and unpainted. Yes the beautiful paint jobs are also by Chris and his immense talent makes me absolutely ill. You can reach Chris at Sash and Saber Castings, 119 Dublin Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609, (919) 870-5513 (9-5, EDT, Mon-Fri) or at Christopherhnc@earthlink.net. Chris will have a web site up by the Summer at www.sashandsaber.com. It was an absolute pleasure to photograph these figs and I am alreasy working on my own ACW figs purchased from Chris. I strongly endorse these figs as the best quality castings available in the market today in their respective categories.
