HMGS South's Recon 00

After Action Report

by Bill Moreno

Vince Clyant's War of the Austrian Succession In Italy

In many respects RECON 00 (28-30 April 00) was another "Best Ever" for HMGS SOUTH. By comparison with last year, we had 61% more games In the program (71 versus 44.) And while we maintained the custom of losing a few games and vendors en route to the show, more than enough games to replace them cropped up. In fact, It proved necessary to deploy an additional row of tables In the Coral Ballroom (main area) to accommodate additional games. Our tournaments also grew. Evan Sherry's ASL required both of the side rooms.

As sign ups came in, Rhen and I were called on to run additional tables around the corner to Cypress Boom, even though we had placed more in that room than previously. That is the kind of problem convention organizers like to have.

A new "Junior ARMATI Tournament" prepared by Alan Sheridan of the Savannah GA area provided young players with a splendid occasion to develop their appreciation of history and tactics. And our Guests of Honor, Bob Coggins and CrWg Taylor (NAPOLEON'S BATTLES-among other things) were ably assisted by our own Chuck Holabird In the presentation of a full slate of NB games. Chuck Is a mainstay of the SOUTH convention program.

In addition, Richard Borg demonstrated the HASBRO adoption of his ACW "Command and Colors" game being sold as a boxed miniatures game called "BATTLE CRY." Even more picturesque, Richard put together a memorable 30mm "Column Line and Square (Slaughter)" game reminiscent of the classic 1960s Midwestern tradition.

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

At right, Vince Clyant's War of the Austrian Succession in Italy game.

ARMATI

First Prize: Rick Fontana, Renaissance Italian City States.
Second Prize: Steve Ringanese, English 100 Years War.
Third Prize: Robert Grainger, Samurai (Feudal Japanese).

JUNIOR ARMATI

First Prize: Dusty Crow, Carthaginians.
Second Prize: Nick Aversano, Sung Chinese.
Third Prize: Kenny Kahler, 12th Century Byzantines.

Alan Sheridan, who organized this tournament and brought down the students from Hinesville Middle School just outside of Ft Stewart near Savannah, offers the following observations: The preponderance of infantry armies among the winners is probably due to the Intro scale which really limits maneuver. For RECON 01 I hope next year's contestants will have optimal scale armies.

I would add that Alan plans to attend HURRICON with club officers from the school wargame club. Also that we hope some young Florida players may be interested in joining the competition next year. For that reason, I am listing Alan as POC for getting young Armati players into the swing.

BATTLE CRY TOURNAMENT
