Editorial

As you can tell, the Rebel Yell now has a new look. I wanted to make a few minor layout changes to make it easier to put together in the future (You do know that this takes quite a bit of work, right?). Let me know your thoughts about the style, format, & content, both good & bad. I want to continue to provide you with what many feel is the PREMIER HMGS NEWSLETTER. My contact info is below.

Now that HURRICON '98 has come and gone, I want to say how much I enjoyed meeting many of you at the convention. Regardless of the bad weather, I think we all had a good time and played in many great games. Turnout was not as high as expected because of Hurricane Georges, but we still managed to satisfy the hotel contract, renew many members, and cover all expenses.

I would also like to thank Duke Seifried for coming down as our guest of honor. His wonderfully orchestrated Sudan Game was quite a hit among us South members and also managed to gather quite a few spectators from the Georges evacuees staying in the hotel. Absolutely wonderful!

Also, thanks to everyone who helped make HURRICON '98 flow so smoothly, especially: Nick, Liz and the rest of the Zizo clan, Chuck Holabird, Dan Miller, Jim Birdseye & Rickey Grice. Nick & Liz planned, budgeted & ran the show; Chuck Holabird helped setup tables the night before and gave Nick help in organizing the events; Dan Miller did a wonderful job of running the Armati Tournament; Jim Birdseye was a great ambassador to the numerous hotel guest who stopped by to check out the games; and Rickey Grice was instrumental in making sure that Duke's terrain & figures arrived & left safely.

If you didn't make the convention, you missed out! If you were due to renew at that time, be sure you send in your renewal to the address listed on the Membership form in this issue.

Some bad news: shown below are two messages about Joey Lacour, President of HMGS Gulf South. He passed away recently, and I thought you should know. Best wishes to his family and those close to them.

A Loss

Hilton McManus of HMGS Gulf South contacted me today and I regret that I must report that Joey Lacour, founder and longtime President of that Chapter, finally succumbed to cancer this morning at 0600 hours after a long and courageous struggle. Please keep Joey's friends and family in your prayers as they face this most difficult time. I believe that Hilton will have some additional information shortly. Thanks.

Sincerely, "Bill" Wilbur E. Gray

For anyone interested in sending flowers or other items, Serena and Joey had discussed this issue previously and have asked instead, that a donation be made to the Leukemia Society of America.

You can make a donation by calling 1-888-290-0945. Please state that the donation is made in memory of Joey LaCour. Also, I would suggest that you have the Leukemia Society of America send a card to Joey's family. You can do this by giving the Society the following address:

Joeseph & Serena LaCour and Family
146 Crepe Myrtle Road
Covington, Louisiana 70433

The Society will send an acknowledgement of your gift to Serena. Also, the amount of the gift is not mentioned, so that all gifts are treated the same, regardless if you give $5.00 or $500.00. This certainly seems a very good way to express your feelings.

As an aside, most of you will note that the address given for Joey and Serena is different from the old Metairie address. Joey and Serena, in August, had just bought a house on the north shore of Lake Ponchatrain to bring all of the children closer together. Joey was never able to spend one night in his new house. Very sad.
