MagWeb

MagWeb the subscription Website where you can download articles of over fifty Hobby magazines has produced a list of what folks have been reading on the PA section.

Anyone make a pattern out of that? There is a strong Napoleonic content of course, but it may simply be the predominantly figures-based subscribers use PA as a location for exotica. You can e-mail MagWeb at magweb@magweb.com it's a great idea to save the bawbees.

Found on the Web Socio-Historical Disclaimer: Nothing on this site is intended to promote any political, racial, or social agenda, so if you are working yourself up into an ideological snit about colonialism, please calm down, spare your blood pressure, and just enjoy the site. It's nothing but a few guys having some mildly goofy fun with toy soldiers.

Withering Heights: the Movie

John Kranz, Duke of Bassano has established a very effective support function for the Hobby on the Web taking over the roles magazines and retail outlets used to play, but read on:

"I feel it's time I advise everyone on the status of ConsimWorld. As some of you may already know, the company I was employed by was recently acquired by Adobe Systems. This requires my relocating from Phoenix, AZ to Seattle, WA. Due to this pending move, the office I have been working in, which housed two separate Web servers for ConsimWorld, is closing in the near future.

The issues at hand are as follows

A Unix server was purchased to run WebX software for the Discussion board at . Since this server was housed at my office, no co-hosting fees were involved [these fees can be substantial due to the WebX software]. Due to the pending move, I will now need to find out if I can afford co-hosting the Unix server at an ISP. Past research shows the associated costs will make this a prohibitive option.

A Macintosh server was being borrowed from Apple Computer for the ConsimWorld News and Information Web site . Since my offices will be closing, I have already been required to return the server to the premises of Apple Computer. The problem here is simple - I no longer have access to a powerful Mac server -- and one is needed since the Web Form cgi software runs under Macintosh only. The site is presently down due to this Mac hardware need. I am now checking with ISPs which support Macintosh (and the cgi form software I require).

Recommendations: I recommend that all game publishers consider pursuing what XTR, One Small Step, and GMT Games have already done...set up your own discussion board. My concern is an obvious one...the future of the ConsimWorld Discussion Board is highly in doubt, due to prohibitive costs. I don't have GAMA involved here to help me out...and I doubt they would bother, frankly. The industry has no formal third-party support group.

I do plan to resurrect the ConsimWorld.com News and Information site. The co-hosting fee here will not be nearly as immense. However, I do not anticipate being able to relaunch Consimworld.COM until I am settled in with my relocation to Seattle. This may take up to 90 days.

It's with a heavy heart that I have to make you aware of these issues. In a nutshell, the Discussion Board is simply too costly to run through an ISP based on past research. The ConsimWorld.com News and Information site was EXTREMELY well received, so I will be relaunching this service before the summer. Traffic at this site was really unbelieveable...several thousand individual Page Hits a Day during normal operation!!!"

Since this announcement a number of ideas have been discussed to ensure that there is a site for discussion on the Web.

Next PA should have reviews of Simtac's Rivoli and Azure Wish's Eckmuhl.
