J.H.Johnson for Arms & Armour A well paced summary of the situation leading up to the 1918 offensives by Germany and the counter-offensives that contributed to the collapse of the Hohenzollerns. The collapse of the British forces (and the same for the Germans a few months later) is seen to linked to low troop densities in areas with adequate fortification. (The British lacked adequate fortification because they had been in Attack mode, the Germans because they fought many of their later battles west of their own lines). Behind it all rests the possibility that whatever the Allies thought (the British were contemplating retiring from the Continent if the French broke) or Ludendorf imagined, the German Army, beset by losses and the All Conquering Blockade, was bound for glory in January 1918. Had they sat still behind their trenches they would still have starved. To paraphrase Julian "Thou hast conquered, naval power"! More Book Corner:
