On 6th September, 1965, at 0530 hours, the Indian Army crossed the International border and moved towards Lahore. Indian XI Corps launched their offensive on three main axes. 15th Indian Division moved from Amritsar on the right flank. 7th Indian Division attacked on the central axis and the 4th Indian Mountain Division moved towards Kasur on the left flank. Opposing them were 10th Pakistan Division, under the command of Major-General Sarfraz Khan, and 11th Pakistan Division, under General Hamid. On the central axis, the 7th Indian Division attack developed at Burki, a outpost about 400 metres on the eastern side of the BRB Canal, which was defended by Alpha Company of 17th Punjab Battalion under the command of Major Raja Aziz Bhatti. From 7th September, 1965, onwards, the Indian 7th Division kept launching one brigade-level attack after another, supported by tanks and the full divisional artillery weight. In spite of all this, the tiny band of Pakistani troops at Burki, led by Major Bhatti, held on for much longer then expected.
