proposed and adjudicated by Lee Forester
In this problem, originally appearing in Operations 34, Kampfgruppe Graser has received its orders--first it is to crush the Sherwood Foresters in a two-pronged attack, then swing north and destroy the remaining British battalion positions (see the solution to Problem #4, also in Ops 34). The commander has opted to infiltrate the Sherwood Foresters with a battalion of infantry before the main assault begins. Your mission: come up with the most effective way you can to destroy the Sherwood Foresters, detailing operations for the first turn of the attack. Play the turn out against an opponent or solitaire, describing your actions and why you are taking them. This is an exercise in tactical finesse rather than grand planning, so make sure you elaborate all your tactical tricks and reasons for are doing what you are doing. Larry Brien and Mike Kroona teamed up to tackle this problem and submitted the winning (and indeed only) solution. Their take on the problem is included here for your enjoyment. Naturally I feel compelled to kibitz at the end, but that's what I get paid for.
