Caricatures of Chandler

by Roger Chapman

Roger Chapman (at right) illustrates his travel books with his own drawings. He met David Chandler at RMA Sandhurst when he was an infantry instructor between 1965-1968. Chapman started drawing caricatures when he accompanied military historians on WWI battlefield tours of France in 1966.

As a friend, he has been drawing Chandler ever since--which is a mark of friendship if not his sense of humor.

The publication of the Campaigns of Napoleon transforms Chandler by "fame." (1967)

Chandler undergoes a second apotheosis (1976) after publication o f his books on Marlborough. Note that he is proudly displaying a copy of the apocryphal "Chandler by Churchill."

Chandler as a member of the Staff at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on Sovereign's Day. (1986)

Chandler receives a D. Litt at Oxford (1991), a degree rarely awarded and infrequently to military historians.
