The Best Napoleonic Museums
of Europe:

Ultimate Reference for Napoleonic Sites

by J. David Markham

For those who would like to know where every Napoleonic site is located in the world, there is such a guide. In 1981, Alain Chappet and three other writers published Guide Napoleonien: Descriptifs des musees, monuments, steles, curiosites sur l'histoire de 1795 a 1815 en France et a l'Etranger (Paris, Charles-Lavauzelle, 1981. 283 pages, French text). This Guide was invaluable whether traveling in France, elsewhere in Europe, or even in the U.S.A.

Even more exciting, back in 1993, the same authors released Repertoire mondial des souvenirs napoleoniens (Paris, S.P.M., 1993. 863 pages, preface by Jean Tulard. French text). Like the Guide Napoleonien [and all of Gaul], this book is divided into three parts. It also has a very useful index of names and geographical information. The first part deals with France itself. Organized by Departments, it lists every city that has any kind of Napoleonic site whatsoever, describes it, and tells how to find it. Sometimes they even provide a photograph. The second part deals with Napoleonic sites outside France, mentioning, for example, the P.O.W. museum at Peterborough in the U.K. and the Napoleon House in New Orleans.

The third part, entitled "Itineraire des Campagnes Napoleoniennes," is perhaps the most interesting. It selects twelve campaigns ranging from Italy in 1796-7 and 1800 to the 100 days of 1815 and the "Campagne de Belgique," and follows the action from town to town, pointing out the sites to be found along the way. Thus the "Retour de l'Ile d'Elbe" begins with Golfe-Juan on the coast (with a photograph of the column), takes you inland up through Grasse, Sisteron, and Grenoble (among many others), and ending in Moret-sur-Loing, where there is an ever popular commemorative plaque.

This invaluable book costs 560 Francs (about $115 U.S.) and can be ordered through French bookstores, especially those that specialize in Napoleonic material. Guide Napoleonien is an essential reference for touring Europe if you have a serious interest in Napoleon and his era.
