Second INS Congress
Held in Israel

by dana Lombardy

J. David Markham, Executive Vice President of the International Napoleonic Society (INS) reports that the Second Congress of the INS was held in Israel on 4-10 July 1999. The theme of the Congress was "Napoleon and the French in Egypt and the Holy Land 1798-1801" and was also the first meeting of the Israeli Society for Napoleonic Research (ISNR).

Mordechai Gichon (right), President of the ISNR, was instrumental in having a series of Napoleonic guide signs in Hebrew, Arabic, French and English positioned at key historical locations in Acre. He is now attempting to do the same thing at Jaffa.

David Markham was the first American scholar to attend the academic conference at the State Borodino War and History Museum and Reserve, which celebrated its 160th anniversary and the 187th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino 3-8 September 1999. The event included a commemoration ceremony, a re-enactment of the battle, and an academic conference which featured papers on various aspects of the 1812 campaign, as well as on the difficulties of museum and battlefield preservation.
