Keith Rocco's new illustration shows an Austrian infantryman of the Sztaray Regiment, circa 1799. The regiment cut off the French retreat at Novi and helped capture nearly 20 cannon. This illustration shows the old-style uniform that was gradually being replaced during this period.

Hungarian of the 5th Hussars (left) and a trooper of the 1st Kaiser Dragoons [wearing the new green uniform coat] were part of the Allied 3:1 superiority in cavalry at Novi. The Allies had 11 regts with 7200 troopers versus 2000 French in 12 weak regiments, although broken terrain did not allow the Allies to exploit the disparity fully. Illustrations by Steven Palatka.

French light cavalry of hussars and chasseurs attracted the best recruits, but it was the heavy cavalry (of taller men and larger horses) that were called upon most often to battle enemy infantry and cavalry. Troopers illustrated are: 19th Dragoons (left) and 3rd Cavalry (right), which counterattacked repeatedly at Novi, forestalling their army's collapse. Illustrations by Steven Palatka.
