My Scottish Season

A Collection of Pages
from the Campaign Journal
for The Return of Prince John

by Chris J. Hahn

INTRODUCTION

The following text represents something of a departure from the norm for this writer. That is to comment that, instead of an "intellectual" piece considering the various elements or factors in wargame rules, or a "formulaic" narrative of a wargame, these pages consist entirely of notes generated during the first three months of the fictional ECW campaign, the rules for which were published in a previous issue of this hobby newsletter.

To an extent, there exists a kind of structure within this account: each month invariably begins with an account of the state of the weather. Then, the record or account generally follows the game move sequence of the campaign turn. Battle(s), and the report of same, are recorded as well, but in a condensed version, without maps or very detailed orders of battle.

At the end of each month (or record of a turn), there is a section titled "Notes." In this section, I reflect upon what has happened, summarize events and perhaps even guess at future developments. I also offer comment on the efficacy of the rules and the result of changes; be they considered and planned modifications or those made more or less on the spur of the moment.

Without additional explanation then, here are the first three months of the campaign journal for the Second Civil War being waged in a fictional England during the middle of the 17th century.
