Lesson Four and Five

4: Planning for the Future
5: Emotions

by Chris Engle

Lesson 4

People have imaginations - we can see things that haven't happened yet. If we can see it then we can try to make it happen.

Planning is breaking down a dream into small easily managed steps. Things we can do that will make the dream a reality.

Make a plan
Draw up the plans on paper
Buy the wood
Put it all together

Plans don't always work. They often have to be changed as events unfold. So stay loose!

Plans often need people working together to reach the goal. Teams work because everyone shares a dream and everyone wins if the team wins.

You've got to have a goal to work towards. If you don't have one then someone else will give you one that you may not like.

THE GAME: GET TWO PEOPLE TO COOPERATE ROLE PLAY

The space tourist have had a forced landing in the middle of a large desert. They have many valuables in their luggage that they do not want to leave behind. A group of native nomads come to help. The players need to get two of the natives to carry their property. The native are a proud people who do not respond well to bullying!

Lesson 5

Emotions/feelings are like a sixth sense. They tell us things about the world and ourselves that we might miss. They often feel bad but not listening to them is like driving with you eyes closed! Bad idea!!!

Anger feels like pressure in my head. It happens when I don't get what I want. It give me energy to get what I want.

Sadness feels like a sinking feeling in my stomach. It happens when I lose something. It helps me know what I've got.

Fear feels like a tugging in my stomach or a tightness in my throat. Panic feels like wanting to throw up. It happens when I'm in danger. It helps me stay alert.

Embarrassment feels like wanting to be invisible because everyone is watching me. It happens when I think I've done something wrong. It helps me learn to recognize old mistakes.

Excitement can feel a lot like fear but is about something I'm looking forward to. Uncontrolled excitement can get me into as much trouble as uncontrolled anger can!

People can feel more than one emotion at a time. This can be real confusing.

THE GAME: AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

THE CONFEDERACY

The South has seceded from the Union. They fight now to defend their homes and their way of life. They lack manpower and equipment but make up for that with spirit. When they charge they give rebel yells. They win battles by being aggressive. But they lose the war because they lose too many men in stupid charges.

THE UNION

Union soldiers fight to preserve the United States and end slavery. They have better weapons, equipment and food. They are not as aggressive as the rebels but they win the war by assertively creating boundaries that eventually break the South's ability to fight.
