ASC Games to Bring Werewolf:
The Apocalypse to the PC

by Jon Carter

Darien, CT, September 29, 1998 – Get ready to howl at your PC because ASC Games has signed a licensing agreement with White Wolf Game Studio to bring the award-winning pen and paper role-playing game (RPG), Werewolf: The Apocalypse to life using Epic MegaGames' phenomenal Unreal" 3D technology. Slated to ravage retail shelves fourth quarter 1999, Werewolf: The Apocalypse will be a first to third person action / adventure game based upon White Wolf's apocalyptic Werewolf universe. The game promises to combine action-packed gameplay with all of the dark, atmospheric personality of the hugely successful RPG series. Werewolf: The Apocalypse is being developed by DreamForge Intertainment, the same studio responsible for ASC Games' critically acclaimed Sanitarium and its highly anticipated hunting simulation, TNN Outdoors Pro Hunter, which also utilizes the Unreal engine.

"White Wolf is thrilled to have partnered with companies like ASC Games and DreamForge Intertainment," said Mike Tinney, Vice President of Licensing and Marketing for White Wolf, Inc. "ASC Games maintains a commitment to this genre and a market savvy that is uncommon in this industry these days. After having seen the initial design — we're very pleased. It's everything we'd hope to have at this stage of our Werewolf computer game design."

The storyline of Werewolf: The Apocalypse will focus upon a central character, Ryan McCullough, from White Wolf's fabled World of Darkness – the shared campaign setting in which all White Wolf Game Studio Storyteller games take place. Gamers will play as Ryan - a young, teenager who is just beginning to discover his powers as a Garou - Werewolves that serve as the protectors of Gaia, the spiritual and physical manifestation of mother Earth.

However, the tribe of werewolves that Ryan is a descendant from has long since been corrupted by the impalpable entity known as the Wyrm – the essence of evil and destruction. Ryan soon finds himself at the center of a war that has raged since the beginning of time. Will he join his ancestors and help bring about the destruction of the world? Or will he defy his blood ties and become the servant of Gaia that he knows in his heart he should be? Whichever route he decides will take him from the Streets of London to the ruins of Greece through dark jungles of the Amazon and literally into the very belly of a mythical beast.

"Prior to working as a producer in the interactive entertainment industry, I was one of the original designers and authors of Werewolf: The Apocalypse at White Wolf Game Studio. Working directly on and watching the progression of Werewolf: The Apocalypse from original concept at White Wolf, to cult phenomenon, and now to life on the PC has been an amazing evolutionary process," said Travis Williams, Executive Producer at ASC Games. "One of the key goals that is shared by ASC Games, White Wolf and DreamForge, is to further develop the property into one that stays true to the loyal pen and paper RPG fan, while at the same time appeal to all of the big time PC gamers who are looking for a new standard in action games."

"From a game design standpoint, ASC Games and DreamForge have taken on an extremely aggressive project that would be a tall task for any 3D game engine," stated Mark Rein, vice president of Epic MegaGames, Inc., developers of Unreal and the Unreal Engine. "However, we're excited that they have the confidence in the Unreal Engine as well as their own development resources to further the Engine's capabilities and hopefully make Werewolf: The Apocalypse one of the most anticipated titles of 1999."

Written by professional occultist Isaac Bonewits, the only person ever to earn a degree in Magic from the University of California, this book describes how to create "realistic" magical systems for roleplaying games. It also reveals the "real magical" roots of Magic: The Gathering. This book is a lot of fun to read! It is not part of the "GURPS" system, or any other specific game, so any GM who likes modifying his game's magic systems will get a lot of ideas here.
