Battles in the Stars

Sci-Fi Solo Rules

by George Sivess

I allow the Entomalians three formation choices; after all they are insects, large intelligent man-eating insects, but insects none the less. After I have set up the Terran fleet I roll one regular die. A 1, 3, or 5, results in the Entomalians attacking in the “Claw” formation. A 2 or 4 results in the “Stinger” formation; and a 6 in the “Leaf” formation. The formations are diagramed below.

Each formation has slightly different tactics. The “Claw” tries to surround the enemy on 3 sides (think 5 for the three dimensions of space) and compress them into a tight formation where the Entomalian numbers can prevail. The “Stinger” tries to jab through the enemy and close with the capital ships (bigger targets mean bigger meals) to fire particle weapons at close range. The “Leaf” means the Entomalian Admiral has had too much pollen and has ordered everyone to attack whatever is nearest them. Once every three turns I roll a 12 sided dice to see if the Entomalians go “all out” in a firing phase. A roll of 12 means the Entomalians will use the maximum number of Offensive Factors they can without regard to the defense of their ships. Of course, this roll takes place after I have allocated the Terran targets and Attack Factors.
