From the publishers of “Skirmish” the re-enactor’s magazine comes “The Armourer”, which is a glossy 80 page bi-monthly magazine covering a wide range of subjects. The cover describes it as a “Militaria Magazine”, but in fact it deals with a far wider range of topics than simply medal collecting, badges and ephemera. The Great War, and WWII receive ample treatment in the magazine, and SWA members would find much of interest. Recent articles have covered Turkish Cavalry in the First Balkan War, and an excellent two-part consideration of the 6 inch gun, and the 5. 5”gun in British service during the Twentieth Century. While a long running series by Ray Westlake sets out to record in some detail the stories behind war memorials across the country-very well worthwhile reading! Issue 52 (Summer 2002) has an excellent piece on the destruction of the Collingwood Battalion RND, along with a good piece on Fallschirmjager at the defence of Konigsberg 1945, and a history of the Staffordshire Regiment at War. I learned a great deal about the ‘Freies Indien Legion’ from a one page article in “The Armourer” (More detail than in Osprey!). The journal also contains a splendid number of reviews and advertisements of interest to the historian and researcher of almost every ‘post-ancient’ period. One interesting ‘corner’ is the page devoted to information on Societies and organisations such as ours, and without doubt the SWA should be listed there. I’m not suggesting that this is a ‘wargames’ oriented publication, but certainly its one which deserves to be taken notice of, and may surprise many with the quality of its content. “THE ARMOURER”Bi-Monthly at £2. 70.
