World War I
German Infiltration Tactics

Introduction

By Rich Barbuto

1918 began on the western front with the most successful offensive actions since the opening of the war. Multiple sledgehammer blows delivered by specially-trained attack divisions knocked the Allies backward and very nearly achieved decisive breakthroughs. Fortunately for the Allies, they were able to contain the penetrations and retained the wherewithal to go over to the offensive while the Germans managed only to exhaust themselves and burn up their scarce resources of manpower, weapons, and equipment.

However, it is at the tactical level that the German techniques of infiltration are best played out on the wargaming table. The use of small units of storm troopers armed with a wide variety of weaponry is just more appealing than long lines of rifle wielding infantry trying to close in on the trench line before being machine-gunned. This article will describe these assault techniques and suggest ways for the solo player to use them.
