Niagara

by Rich Barbuto

Let me join Kenn in wishing all SWA members a happy, healthy New Year. Let you enjoy even more time wargaming this year than last.

You will have noticed that this issue is a little late. The fault is mine. I have been quite busy preparing a book for publication. It is a rather lengthy study of the Niagara Campaign of 1814. Others have done excellent works on the individual battles of this campaign: Chippawa, Lundys Lane, the Siege of Fort Erie, and Cook's Mill. What I have attempted to do is to weave these battles together by telling the story of the entire campaign from inception through conclusion.

It took me several years to write but I'm happy with the result. And I could not escape my wargaming background. I have included detailed maps of troop movements, orders of battle, and even thumbnail sketches of British, Canadian, American, and native units. For the War of 1812 fan, there is a lot here you won't find elsewhere. The book should be on the market early in 2001.

Sales of back issues has been heartening and I hope to raise enough revenue to forestall a price increase for awhile. You old members will note that there has been no price increase for the North American edition since our beginning with Lone Warrior 109. However, both postal rates and printing costs have risen during the past five years so I need to sell more back issues to keep costs down. Let me also say that I'm running out of early issues. For awhile I was reprinting issues but that ends up costing more than I charge. So, now when I run out of an issue, I'll refund your money or add an extra issue to your subscription if you let me know in advance. So, for those of you who have been putting off ordering back issues (at the incredible low price of $4 each) don't discover that an issue you want is now out of print.

Let me also encourage you folks to send me articles! Do it for the SWA. Do it for the hobby. Let me toot our horn and remind you that Lone Warrior continues to be exceptionally widely read on the internet. Your article will be available to thousands for years to come! I have often dreamed of increasing the pages of Lone Warrior but it won't happen without you members providing the content.

While I'm at it, let me also make a plea again for some North American to step forward to handle publicity. As I minimum, I'd like to get flyers to various conventions. And I'd like to hear other ideas as well. We are getting better known through the internet and have recruited new members through that medium, but my guess is that a very large number of solo gamers still don't know we are out here and available. Of course, the argument becomes circular. A large membership provides the financial resources to conduct a vigorous advertising campaign but with a modest membership, we haven't the necessary income to spend reaching others. I'll keep you posted!
