Review by Rich Barbuto
As you will have read earlier in this issue, I am always on the lookout for small 25mm or HO scale Napoleonics. Well, I found something pretty neat in an unexpected location. I was investigating a web site for HaT Industries (http://www.hat.com). HaT not only reproduces some really great Airfix models in soft plastic (the entire Airfix WWI series as well as Prussian Landwehr and WW2 Italians), but also produces a very fine line of their own soft plastic figures. They have on the market or are producing a wide range of napoleonics (Prussian, Russian, Austrian artillery, dragoons, lancers etc. as well as Brunswick Avant Garde!) and ACW Zouaves. They even produce some super 1/32 scale figures (Zouaves and Brunswick Avant Garde). The breadth of their enterprise is awesome (and I use that term with humility and some trepidation). If any of this strikes your fancy, find their web site and drool over the photos of painted figures and box designs. I did. But I don't particularly like plastic figures for wargaming. (Oh yeah? Then why do I own tens of thousands of soft plastic figures?) Great detail, wide range, but I just can't seem to get the paint to adhere well enough for my tastes. However, on the HaT site I found other items of interest from various collectors. It was while I was scrolling through page after page of old plastic figures and conversions of the same that I saw something new. A gentleman, Chris D'Arcy by name, converted 1/72 scale plastic figures and recast them in RESIN. That has been an answer to a prayer. Paint adheres well to resin and resin can be carved as required. Chris made his conversions by cutting and swapping arms and head gear. I contacted Chris by e-mail (Desmodus@nycc.edu) and he sent me a slew of figures. Chris, by the way, is a full time student and, like me, he is amassing as much of Waterloo in 1/72nd as he can. Chris has three different French infantry in overcoat marching, three Nassau Grenadiers standing at ease, seven wonderful French foot artillerists, French Young Guard, and even a Dutch jaeger. Prices are reasonable and service excellent. Write to Chris at: 8 Washington St. Apt D, Seneca falls, NY 13148. These guys paint up great and are a super addition to my polyglot array of waterlog figures. Chris, thanks for your contribution to the hobby!
