COMPUTER CORNER:

Harpoon Classic

from Softkey

By David Walker

I recall reading reviews of Harpoon in previous issues {LW 110, LW 111--GE} and a mention of Caesar by George Reath in LW 113. I have just purchased (today in fact) both games for 10.00 pounds each at the Electronic Boutique shop in Maidstone. They have taken over the site, stock etc., of what was a Games Zone shop. I've just tried out both games.

Caesar is a Sierra Originals version and I wonder if this can be linked up to Cohort (which I haven't got yet) like George Heath suggests. {I believe the feature was available across all machine types--GE}.

I can remember reading some rave reviews of Harpoon lin LW110 by Richard Goyder]. A particular version was recommended, but don't ask me which one. All I know is that I have the Softkey Harpoon Classic version. The blurb on the back says it contains everything ever produced for Harpoon including all 4 battlesets, all 3 designers series and the scenario editor. I think this may be the one I read about. {Sounds like Harpoon Classic version 1.5 CD-ROM only version to me--GE}.

I tried what I think was a very simple scenario with four small coastal frigate/PT boats which proceeded to get shot out of the water by the Norwegians with a Leander as unnecessary backup. Forget the result, it was only a trial to see what happened. This game package seems to be first class, and all for 10.00 pounds! What more can I say. I just hope I get to play it what with work, a new house which needs gutting, etc. Caesar looks good as well if a completely different type of game.

I am afraid I am one of those gamers who actually use their PC for work more than games {you are not alone there, unfortunately--GE}. Although I have several other good looking games such as Civilisation, Colonisation, Great Naval Battles, Battles of the South Pacific, etc., the only game I have managed to play is Fields of Glory which I rate as first class. If you know of any games in similar vein please let me know. Thanks for the column, it serves its purpose as far as I am concerned. Keep up the good work.
