I thought the following might be helpful for other members: "The Winter King" by Bernard Cornwall. Pub: Michael Joseph 1995. ISBN 0 7181 3620. For those who find research boring and reference books difficult to read and often contradictory, well written historical fiction can offer and alternative. Bernard Cornwall, better known for his Napoleonic "Sharp" novels, now offers this altemative for those wargaming Dark Ages Britain with his book "The Winter King". Set in 480 AD Britain it is the story of "Arthw" but bringing him down to earth and making him a more believable character. There are enough details to re-fight the fictional battles on the wargame table and the accwate detail of ammour, weapons and strategy can help reenact actual historical battles with more accuracy. This book is the first in the trilogy "The Warlord Chronicles" with the second volume due in the Spring of 1997. Which is eagerly awaited as it certainly makes my research easier and more enjoyable. [Thanks for this Sean, must now dash out and get a copy. Not only do I enjoy Bernard's novels but I am slowly rebasing my Dark Ages armies after Andrew Freeman suggested the use of The Age of the Country At War (Samurai rules) for that period and they work! Finally for the ACW buffs if you have not read Bernard's "Rebel" series, where have you been? Kenn] Other BookCase Reviews:
