For the avid ACW naval wargamer, I found this table compiled by Patrick Hreachmack a very useful tool. Patrick has summarized almost every large combatant that fought in the American civil war along with a number that didn't quite make it into action.

While the summary of the commission dates and service theaters are good, I found the real value in the listing of what ship is available from which manufacturer in 1:600 scale. This is the first source I have seen that compiles all the manufacturers producing a casting of a specific class of vessel. In addition to castings, the list also includes various items including guns, boats, shore batteries and docks.

The list appears to be comprehensive. I checked its accuracy against the catalog offerings of the three listed manufacturers -- Thoroughbred, Peter Pig and Bay Area Yards. The only variances I could find are no indication that Thoroughbred's guns are currently unavailable and a number of vessels listed as available from Bay Area Yards that are not listed in the BAY website catalog as I wrote this (8/14/03). These include the Confederate gunboat PeeDee and the clipper ship Comet. These may be very new releases, but it would be good if these were marked as forthcoming kits.

Otherwise, well worth the investment. The list is available for $3 from Patrick Hreachmack. You can reach Patrick at Seapatrick@surf-ici.com.
