Figures Review

Review by Richard Brooks

Kennington Miniatures, 1A Kempsford Road, Kennington, London SE11 4NU (01144 171-735-7787).

Kennington has a diverse collection of 20mm figures along with some 15mm ACW and 15 and 25mm Chinese. For the colonial period they have a line of figures for the Boxer Rebellion that is quite nice. I have already tested these figures out with my horde ESCI and Airfix plastic 1/72 or 20mm figures. These little guys, at 22mm from bottom of foot to eye, fit perfectly.

They are a little stockier than the plastics so you really couldn't mix these with plastics within a unit but you could certainly put them on the same table and they would look great. The catalog lists eleven chinese figures but with the variants with some of the positions it comes out to 26 figures. The Russians 6 sailors and 6 infantry, Austrians 2 sailors, British 4 infantry and 3 Light Marines, 5 American Marines and 3 German Marines and 3 East Asia Brigade. Since I didn't get the full range I can't comment on everything, but what was sent is quite nice indeed. If you have a hankering for the Boxer rebellion and only have plastics this is one way to increase your gaming range.

With 26 Chinese and the other figures, if you can build Peking or the Taku forts your on your way to marching across China. The ESCI British and Indian troops along with some of the French Foreign Legion (those in sun helmets) you could do some very nice gaming. The only problem I have with Kennington is their lack of officers. There is little flash on the figures and the detailing is easy enough to paint. The poses are a little static but the variety of some poses should easily make up for that.

These figures are 35p each, which translates to about 55 cents each, this is not too bad, even when you add in the shipping. These folks are nice enough to give you a choice of surface or air for shipping. I do not know if anyone in the US carries these figures, they are not listed in the last Emperors HQ catalog and since Brookhurst refuses to reply to my letters, up theirs anyway.

Mr. Edwards at Kennington is very nice and helpful I'm sure doing business with them would be a pleasure. I plan on stopping in next time I'm over there.
