Castaway Arts

25mm Wolseley's Ashanti War

Reviewed by Richard Brooks

I was not familiar with Gerry Webb's Castaway Arts figures before this, but boy do I like what I see - checkout the scan. (Castaway Arts, PO Box 7599, Cairns, Q. 4870, Australia - phone/fax +070-404122079)

The samples from their latest (? what others are available???) colonial release - Wolseley's Ashanti War include 13 figures. The price is currently at 76 cents (US) each plus air freight charged at cost which still makes them very competative.

The figures are 25mm from the bottom of the foot to the eyes, or 28mm to the top of the head, larger 25s. Some of the poses are a little stiff, but my overall impression is very favorable. The detail is some of the best I've seen in figures, crisp, clean, very little flash, and well proportioned. I can't wait to see the Ashanti's. The British infantry include a separate cast feather hackle to denote the Black Watch Regiment. If you wish to represent this unit, remove the detail from the cast sprue and attach to the left hand side of the pith helmet with super glue.

The scan corresponds to the following list of Ashanti Wars, British figures from Castaway Arts:

AB1 West Indian Regt. Zouave Dress, at the ready
AB2 West Indian Regt. Zouave Dress, loading
AB3 West Indian Regt. In fez, advancing
AB4 West Indian Regt. In turban, firing
    AB5 British Infantry Firing
    AB6 British Officer Firing Pistol
    AB7 British Infantry Advancing
    AB8 British Infantry Running
    AB9 Haussa Infantry Firing
    AB10 Haussa Infantry Advancing
    AB11 Native Scout Braided Hair
AB13 Native Scout Buffalo horn cap
Not shown: AB12 Native Scout Feather head dress

AB13 has to be the strangest of the group, this figure looks like a viking in a horn helmet with dredlocks and a musket. As with the two other head dresses these are somewhat rare among the native scouts but quite accurate.

These figures by Castaway Arts are a welcome addition to the colonial period. I hope the Ashanti figures follow soon, I just might have to start painting for the Ashanti War. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
