Yanaway Commentary

The intent of this setup is to provide minimal ATEC to all units. Kiev is heavily defended and a relatively strong counterattack force is initially formed around the 7th Panzer Cadre to counter initial Soviet penetrations.

Judge's Verdict

What is this fascination with hex 1006? Sure, holding onto 1006 and 1106 gives the Germans a partial anchor in the south, but this means nothing if Soviet units attacking out of the Lyutezh bridgehead blow a gaping hole in the line. And that is the most likely result against this setup, given a competent Soviet commander.

Once again hexes 0309 and 0907 are overrunable. And why is the truck directly in harm's way?

Creating a "Fortress Kiev" is a very appealing strategy. The benefits of holding Kiev are obvious: so long as the Germans retain the city, Soviet supply lines will be at least partially constricted. Better still, hanging onto Kiev until the end of play results in a 50-point swing in VPs. The problem is, given the Soviet artillery at hand (remember the 1.5 multiplier for artillery divisions in the Nov I 43 combat phase), Kiev is probably untenable. Against a 16-point defense, the Soviets can muster odds of 5:1 (-3) attacking only from the three hexes east of the Dnepr! Of course, this artillery won't be shooting up anything else and it will be out of position Nov II, so maybe it's worth it. And if the Soviets commit most of their artillery against Kiev and roll the NE...

Mark's setup as submitted showed the Luftwaffe flying DAS over Kiev and hexes facing the Lyutezh bridgehead as part of the initial setup. Unfortunately, this isn't allowed under scenario rules. (Flavio is preparing a second edition that will allow a limited number of German air units to fly DAS as part of the initial deployment. However, such missions will be allowed only in the 24th Corps sector; the Soviets had been attacking unsuccessfully in the Bukrin area for some time, and this diversion was attracting most of OKH's attention.)

With the German DAS grounded, this deployment allows easy and immediate access to the critical victory hexes of Korosten, Zhitomir and Berdichev.

Verdict. 7th Place
