The Battle for Kiev, 1943

Errata, Modifications,
and Questions and Answers

by Flavio Carrillo and Rick Gayler

Erratum: Change the point spread for a draw from "15-30" to "16-30."

Erratum: Axis Order of Battle, 24th Panzer Corps: Hex 3B: 1106 should read 1 x 6-8 Pz Cadre (14-10) 19

Erratum: Unfortunately, an error was made compiling the German air units for the scenario. Therefore, do not use the Luftwaffe units listed in the original Axis Order of Battle, but use the following listing of units instead:

Luftwaffe

Place at any Axis- owned airbases. Note: Type B air units may be deployed off map (see below).

    4x Me109G
    1x Fwl90A
    2x Ju87D
    5x Ju88A
    3x He111H

Note: This makes quite a difference in the game; the Germans now have a more potent offensive punch, and more staying power on the defensive.

New Rule: Soviet Air Reinforcements

Any eliminated Soviet air unit appears as a reinforcement in the following Soviet initial phase. This rule applies to eliminated units only-aborted units are handled normally.

New Rule: Off-map Air Basing

Type B air units (only) may base off map. To show that an air unit is based off map, simply place it in a convenient spot to the side of the playing area.

During its air movement step, an air unit based off map may be placed in any friendly owned hex along the edge of the playing area. It may then move normally, using its entire movement allowance.

While based off map, an air unit may not be bombed (it is assumed that even if bombed, another air unit from elsewhere on the Eastern front takes its place).

Clarification: When playing this scenario, do not use Rule 39-Optional Rules or Rule 40- Partisans.

Clarification: Rule 33- Occupation

Due to German security assets not directly shown in the game, the Soviet player may not make any partisan attacks during the course of this scenario.

Note: On Charles Sharp's Soviet OB some of the unit strengths listed do not match the counters. In these cases, ignore unit ID, and substitute any unit of the same size, type and strength.

Modification: Victory

German:

Add the following German victory point awards to the schedule:
      Fastov (3B:0710): 3 points.
      Belaya Tserkov (3B:0909): 3 points.

Note: Belaya Tserkov is a Reference City and Fastov is a Point City on the draft SE Collector Series maps. Draw these onto your scenario map if you wish.

Reduce the German awards for Korosten, Zhitomir and Berdichev to 3 points each.

Soviet:

Add the following Soviet victory point awards to the schedule:
      Fastov (4A:0710): 5 points.
      Belaya Tserkov (4A:0909): 10 points.

Reduce the Soviet awards for Zhitomir, Berdichev and Korosten to 10 Pts each.

Note that the total number of potential VPs has not changed for either side. Continue to use the Victory Level Table from the original scenario rules.

Questions and Answers

If a German c/m unit is required to retreat off the map, can it be assumed that there is an Axis unit off the map edge for it to retreat onto, per Rule 9F1?

    Yes, per Flavio.

More Questions and Answers

Axis Order of Battle, 4th Panzer Army Non-Divisional Units: Does the German truck counter count towards the 6 RE deployment requirement for the 24th Panzer Corps sector?

Well, Rule I41 states that a truck counter "is treated as a 0-strength c/m unit," and Rule 3D lists a truck counter as 3 REs in size. Therefore, the answer would appear to be "yes." However, Flavio did not intend that the German player should be able to do this, and so add the following proviso to the Axis OB: "The truck unit does not count towards this 6 RE requirement."

Define more exactly the "24th Panzer Corps sector."

The 24th Panzer Corps sector consists of any Axis-owned hexes in or south of the 07xx row of the playing area.

Can the Soviet player upgrade any of his 3-6 rifle divisions to 4-6 rifle &visions during the course of the scenario? Can he assemble/convert any artillery divisions or convert/upgrade any engineer units to assault engineer brigades?

No. If this were possible, it would have been stated in the Soviet Order of Battle.

What are the replacement limits for special unit types such as cavalry, artillery and engineers?

Special unit replacement limits for this scenario are governed by Rule 34B of the Scorched Earth rules. For example, the German player may replace only one artillery RE per month, and the Soviet player may replace/rebuild only 6 REs of cavalry units per turn.

Can German air units be replaced?

Only within the framework of the regular SE rules. For example, if at the start of a German player turn there are four fighter units in the EFT box, then two are replaced and two go to Remnants.
