The Royal Greek Air force (Elleniki Vasiliki Aeroporia) mustered only about 150 aircraft of all types in October of 1940. Nor were the aircraft on hand homogeneous--the four bomber squadrons operated four different aircraft. Italian air superiority was overwhelming, and the Greeks could only hope for British aid. Little was provided--only 13 British squadrons were operative in Greece including the islands in April 1941. Very little was provided in the way of new equipment, only 12 Gloster Gladiator fighters and five Blenheim IV bombers were received by the EVA prior to the German onslaught. Other aircraft were on the way: 36 Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters from the U.S., 12 Hurricane Mk II's, 40 more Blenheim IV's and 9 Beauforts were expected in May and June 1941.
