Poland had two proposed plans for its
defense against Germany in 1939. The one it
adopted called for a strong defense of the Polish
border areas, with a gradual withdrawal as the
German offensive developed. The Poles hoped
this plan would buy them enough time for the
French to launch an offensive and thus turn the tide
against Germany. In actuality, German mechanized
forces smashed through the Polish lines in a
matter of days, enveloping and destroying the
Polish armies on the frontier.
The other plan called for a defense in depth-
Poland would abandon its overlylong border with
Germany and concentrate its troops behind the
river lines of central Poland. The Germans would
thus have to advance eastwards and then engage
Polish forces ensconced in good defensive terrain.
The hope, again, was that the plan would buy
enough time for the French to enter the war and
take the pressure off Poland.
The second plan was rejected because it
was too risky. The peacetime stations of many
Polish units were well to the west of the river lines,
and these units needed to withdraw east for the
plan to work. For a variety of reasons, Poland
couldn't afford to mobilize these units and move
them west, unless a German attack was certain
and imminent. This, however, led to the possibility
of a German surprise attack catching and
destroying these units as they tried to mobilize and
move east..
This scenario games out the military
campaign had Poland adopted the defense in
depth plan. It ignores the possibility of a German
surprise attack catching Poland before its forces
can man the river lines-as this seems an even
more helpless exercise than the historical
campaign. However, for real fanatics, an option
explores this as well.
The Defense in Depth scenario uses all
standard First to Fight rules, including victory
conditions, with one exception: When figuring the
die roll modifiers for the French offensive, ignore
German ownership of Katowice, Krakow, Lodz,
and Poznan. (Since Poland would not defend
these cities and would have informed France of its
plans, German capture of them should not have
affected French plans to launch an offensive.)
Nasty Nazis and Perfidious
Allies
This option explores the chance that a
German surprise attack would catch the Poles
before they could implement their defense in depth
plan.
Before setting up their forces, the players
determine the likelihood of a German surprise
attack succeeding:
- First, the Polish player declares
whether or not he will mobilize early. Early
mobilization will decrease the chance of a surprise
attack succeeding. It does, however, risk Britain
and France abandoning Poland, by declaring that
Polish early mobilization actually provoked the
German invasion.
- Second, the German player rolls one die.
Modify the die roll by +1 if the Polish player
ordered early mobilization. On a modified roll of 1
or 2, a German attack achieves surprise. Do not
set up the Polish forces per the scenario's OB.
Instead, use the Polish Mobilization Schedule,
setting up the Polish armed forces through partial
mobilization (but not secret or full mobilization).
"Turn 1" full mobilization reinforcements are
received on Game Turn 2, and "Turn 2" full
mobilization and "Sep II 39" reinforcements on
Game Turn 7. Polish rail capacity is 4 REs per
turn. Ignore mention of resource points,
breakdowns, replacements, and the Polish Navy.
Also ignore the Defense in Depth scenario's
Polish reinforcements, except for the French air
unit.
- Third, if Poland ordered early mobilization,
the Polish player rolls one die. On a roll of 1, 2,
or 3, the Allies abandon Poland to its fate. The
French will neither intervene nor send their air unit
reinforcement.
All other scenario rules remain in force.

SECRET MOBILIZATION
Poland devised a secret mobilization scheme that
would meet its defense needs without upsetting its allies.
Poland's allies, France and Britain, did not want Poland to
declare full mobilization prior to the outbreak of war, for fears
of antagonizing the Germans and giving them an excuse to
invade. Poland, however, needed to mobilize its army in
event of a crisis, as a German surprise attack would overrun
the country before it could mobilize. Accordingly, Poland
devised a secret mobilization scheme. While secret
mobilization was not as efficient as full mobilization, it
ensured that Poland was not completely defenseless in
September 1939. (Historically, Poland ordered secret
mobilization on Aug 1139.)
