Soviet Guards: Part II
Guardians of the Socialist State

Other Guards

by John M. Astell

In addition to the major command and combat units, the Red Army formed many other Guard formations, from smaller combat units, support units, and air units.

Among the smaller combat units, many Guards tank regiments were formed. In the air, elite formations became Guards air divisions and Guards air regiments.

A host of support units became Guards, from division on down. At least six artillery divisions and six antiaircraft artillery divisions became Guards, and seven Guards mortar divisions were formed from rocket artillery units. Smaller units - brigades, regiments, and battalions - included all sorts of Guards, such as Guards artillery, antiaircraft, engineer, and motorcycle units.

Except for artillery and rocket artillery divisions, Scorched Earth doesn't show any support units as Guards. This is partly for convenience, as there would be no strength increase or other effect on the game when a regular support unit became Guards. It is also partly due to lack of information, as info on how many support units became Guards and which units became which Guards is very sketchy.
