Pre-Columbian & Conquest

Aztec Warfare: Imperial Expansion and Political Control, by Ross Hassig, pub. University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 1988, pp.381, illus., 21 maps, I have seen this title mentioned in articles but have never seen it for sale until now, it fully justifies buying it as it's chapters on Arms and Armour, and Combat are very helpful, while it reproduces some illustrations that I have not seen before, which is always good to have, although the illustrations are in black and white, more's the pity. This is one of the modern books on the Aztecs that is required reading for any researcher, I still have not found out about the various shield designs and what they signify i.e. warrior rank and/or tribe locality, still this work is indeed a help.

Colonial Period

Three Brothers at Havana 1762, by Sonia Keppel, pub. Michael Russell Ltd., Wiltshire, 1981, pp.110, illus., 1 map, covers the British siege and capture of Havana in 1762 which involved three brothers in senior command positions, the C-in-C being Lt. General George , 3rd Duke of Albemarle, the naval second-in-command was Commodore the Hon. Augustus Keppel and the third was one of the two Divisional Generals, Major General the Hon. William Keppel, the author being descended from this family has used her access to the family letters etc. to bring about this interesting narrative of the campaign, a slim volume but full of helpful data.

The Last Inca Revolt 1780-1783, by Lillian Estelle Fisher, pub. University of Oklahoma Press, 1966, pp.409, 6 maps, 8 illustrations, there are not many books on this subject and the vast majority of these are in Spanish so to obtain this work in English which is well researched makes this a real find and an extremely useful book.

The Original Gringos: An Ulster Regiment in Mexico 1768-1771, by Ralph Weaver, pub. Military Illustrated, November 1997, No.114, pp.25-27, 1 flag and two figures in colour, a useful article which might surprise a few North American readers of M.I.

Gálvez y la Guerra de la Independencia Americana, part 1, by Antonio Suau Forés, pub. Boletin de la Agrupacion de Miniaturistas Militares de España, No.139, 1st quarter 1997, pp.4-21, this part covers the early period and the capture of Baton Rouge, San Luis & Mobile.

Latin American General Titles

George Canning and the Independence of Latin America, by Leslie Bethell, pub. The Hispanic and Luso Brazilian Council, London 1970, paperback, pp.22, the printed text of a lecture delivered at Canning House, London 1970, a nice compact text on the man who pushed through Westminster, against great opposition, British recognition of Argentina, Gran Colombia, Mexico 1825, and Brazil in 1826.

The Rise and Progress of the South American Republics Vols. 1 & 2, by George W. Crichfield, pub. T. Fisher Unwin, London 1909, Vol.1. pp. 561 & Vol.2. pp.658, the first volume up to page 264 give a broad general history from 1808-1907 some interesting data here, the second volume deals with Foreigners in Latin America and Relations with Foreign Governments, and the Monroe Doctrine, both volumes have some very interesting details but some of his personal views should be remembered that they were made in 1908 by a North American, other than that there are still many pages of interesting data to be gleaned from this work.

Memoirs of General Miller in the service of the Republic of Peru, 2 Vols., edited by his brother, pub. Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, London 1828, Vol.1. pp.389, 4 maps, Vol.2. pp.460, 4 maps, this is one of the works on the Wars of Liberation that anybody interested in this period should at least look at, great information and details, not only on Peru but of La Plata, Chile and Bolivar and his Campaigns in Gran Columbia and Peru, recommended reading.

Yesterday's Soldiers: European Military Professionalism in South America, 1890-1940, by Frederick M. Nunn, pub. University of Nebraska Press, 1983, pp.350, what a pity this work has no photographs of these men or their pupils, a very good study of the inroads that European military teaching took into many South American countries during these decades, a very helpful work.
