My purpose in compiling this treatise have been threefold. Primarily I feel that the study of Polish uniforms from the era of Napoleon should begin here, with the legions in Italy and there is far too little known of them, even less in English. Secondly it is my hope that this will elicit some response from others upon this same subject. We can never know just how accurate our sources of information actually are until they have been brought out in to the open and examined. Nor can we ever hope to increase our knowledge and understanding unless we are willing to share what we have with others. Thirdly, and by no means the least in importance. I am indeed fortunate in having a wife who is fluent in French and English as well as her own native tongue, and one whom understands my passion with these things and their importance to me, and is willing to spend long hours in the translation of countless pages; most of this material I have promised to have translated for one or another colleage, so I present it now.
