Parliamentary Army Curiosities

These are principally drawn from 'State Papers 28' (S.R28), a vast and largely untapped manuscript collection of documents concerning the administration of the Parliament's armies 1642-60, held at the Public Record Office, Chancery Lane, London. Many of them were kindly communicated to me by Miss E. A. Laurence.

I have added some comments and explanations, in square brackets.

(1) Uniform and Clothing

(a) '....pay unto Major May or whom he shall appoint the sum of #39 13s. for 366 pairs of stockings and 366 pairs of Broagues for the use of Col. Henry Grey's regiment'

Warrant from Lord President of Munster [Ireland] August 1643. RRO. SP 28 64 pt.4 f.829

[I know nothing about this regiment, but it was not the same as that of Henry Grey, Earl of Stamford].

(b) 'Paid Mr. Richard Hunt, Milliner, for 104 orange scarfes tie sashes] at 4s.4d a piece' SP 28 35 pt. 1 f.61.3 [no date].

(c) 'Received of Mr. Francis Clerk 400 coats of green cloth for Col. Hampden's regiment. Sept. 11 1646 [but refers to coats provided earlier]' SP 28 36 pt.6 E664

(d) 'The [Provost] Marshall general's men to wear coats with attached badges at £ 63 3s. for 26 coats August 1648. [It was presumably the badges that cost the money (cf.(e)) Probably they were made of silver] SP 28 66 pt.2 f.269

(e) 'Pay unto Mr.Richard Downes for 667 cassocks of venice red cloth...at nyne shillings per cassock' February 1648-9. SP 28 68 pt.3 f.468

(f) 'Issued to: Major Holmes [Earl of Manchester's Regt. of Foot] 200 green coats faced with red: one red coat faced with green [for a drummer?] Colonel Montagn's Regiment: red coats faced with white [Unspecified recipients] Red coats faced with blue [Fairfax's Regt.?] Fine broad cloth coats with bayes [baize] bottoma and lupe [loop] lace with machinga [matchinga? facinga?] Broad cloth breechea with linings and machings. Long Coats with baise bottoms and silk.' February 1644/5 SP 28 26 pt.2 f.l36

Bandoliers

'Pay £ 100 for 1000 collars of bandaleers with white bottoms blew painted in oyle at 2s. per piece [for the Lord General's Regt. of Foot?] and £ 75 for 1000 collars of bandaleers covered with black leather with neates [neat's] leather collars stringed and ringed at eighteen pence per piece. April 1649. SP 28 69 pt.2 E323
