A. Kazaks (we're talking true Zaporozhians here, not wimps from
the Don who worked for the Muscovites) were initially a mounted infantry,
who readily took the role of dragoons in the Polish army. In fact, many
Ukranian historians claim that they were acting as dragoons before the rest
of the world accepted the idea. (Earlier many kazaks were armed with
firearms, but many were bow-armed so not qualified for the status of
dragoons.) Within the Armati structure, the Kazaks can dismount like
dragoons in all respects.
B. Polish Dragoons were well mounted units, as opposed to mounted
on nags like most of the rest of European dragoons. They were quite
capable and did charge home upon many occasions.
Most of this artillery was destroyed early in the second period in
which the Polish army went through drastic changes and fought against
basically everybody. It started with the Kazak Rebellion of Bogdan
Khemilnitski which tore apart the foundations of the Polish army and more
importantly the Polish kingdom. Wars with Muscovy, Sweeden, Transylvania,
Turkey, Prussia, civil war, rebellious magnates, and mutinous troops soon
followed. Poland hired many German mercenaries from the surplus of troops
after the TYW, but only musketeers and cavalry. Poland relied on her own
cavalry to keep enemy cavalry away and so did not hire pikemen.
