How to Fly a Sopwith Camel

Training

by Adam Goodheart*, Washington, DC

  • a Sopwith F.1 Camel biplane
  • a 150-horsepower Bentley rotary engine
  • two (2) Vickers .303 machine guns goggles a map case
  • a coat made of the skins of Chinese dogs
  • A pair of knee-length fleece-lined boots
  • wolfskin gloves

    WARNING

You may have noticed something missing from the equipment list. That's right: no parachute. The Allied High Command believed that "a pilot's job is to stick to his aeroplane." Oh well… as you and your Camel plummet toward the fields of Flanders, buck up your esprit with a jolly chorus of the pilots' mess hall song:

Take the cylinder out of my kidneys,
The connecting rod out of my brain, my brain,
From the small of my back take the camshaft
      And assemble the engine again.
