News of the Hobby

by Dan Schorr

Don Featherstone, arguably the best known Miniature Gamer in the world, will be one of the two special guests at Origins'88. The other guest is Andrew Offut, well known science fiction writer.

Don is well remembered for Wargamer's Newsletter, the first (after Jack Scruby's LittleWars and Table Top Talk) Historical Miniature Magazineto reach international circulation and isthe direct reason for manyof today's gamers to be in the hobby. Don has written many booksabout the hobby which helped the whole thing along. It can be safely said that the Historical Miniature hobby would be a shade of what it is today if not for Don.

Don will be presenting a series of seminars and demonstrations on a variety of topics, including Historic Battlefields, the Hobby of Wargaming, and Masterminding Wargames.

This coup on the part of TSR at the behest of HMGS shows that they have a true interest in making THIS Origins what it should always have been for Miniature Gamers.

HMGS-Midwest will coordinate Miniatures Gaming at Origins. The coordinator is Bob Bigelow who is also treasurer of the Gamemaster's Guild and proprietor of Friendly Hobby Shop in Waukeegan, Illinois.

While many events are planned, many more are needed. Gamers willing to support their hobby by putting on an event should contact Bob Bigelow, c/o TSR Inc., P.O. Box 756, Lake Geneva, W1 53274.

Bob is looking for judges willing to put on introductory games for beginners. Games with great figures, great scenery to expose a high degree of expertise and color to observers and gamers alike. You must be willing to stay with your game, whether it is well attended or not and perhaps just answer questions put to you by the public.

In addition, regular Historical Miniature convention type games are needed. Judges can attend free for a 16 hour game commitment (note: that includes about 11-12 hours of set-up and take-down time for each 8 hour event). There will be no game fees.

This is the best chance we've had in a long time to show what a great attendance Historical Miniature Gamers can give to a show like this. I hope to see you all there.
