ORDER OF BATTLE IN ITALY - 1859The Austrian Army was formed into 1st and 2nd Armies. The first had 3 Corps, the second 4. Each contained a separate cavalry brigade of light cavalry and a reserve artillery park. Within each Corps were 2 divisions, I of which usually had 2 brigades, the other 3. Also attached were Corps reserve artillery and either a regiment or a group of 4 squadrons (some light horse units had 8) nominally for reconnaissance, security, and pursuit but not necessarily put to good use in those capacities. The brigade structure was unusual. Each consisted of 1 infantry regiment of 4 battalions, each of 6 companies (1 grenadier) with a single jager or borderer battalion and an 8 gun light artillery battery. My notes lack the command structure of the 3rd Corps, but the Austrian order of battle brought together at Solferino - practically the whole force in Italy, is shown below: FIRST ARMYIII CORPS1st Division: Field Marshall Lieutenant de Shoenberger
