SEVEN YEARS WARGAMERS MEET The Second Annual Seven Years War Association Midwest Regional Meet was held on April 30th in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was hosted at the Holiday Inn by Tod Kershner and his local "Age of Reason" wargame club. This enthusiastic group did a great job and made the affair most enjoyable for all. During the day there were many games going with al132 attendees playing in at least one. A relaxed banquet followed with a number of door prizes being drawn, then it was back to the gaming tables for many of us. Joe Gepfert of the Reiter set up his trade table and seemed to do a fairly brisk trade in figures and books. Bill Protz and Rob Oldenburg of Milwaukee hosted a 30mm game using the original CHARGE! rules. My forces of Ruritania (actually SYW Austrians) were fought to a draw by Ted Haskell's army. Bill and I began wargaming with these rules in 1967 and still enjoy them. Also in the morning was a naval miniatures game using Ship of the Line rules hosted by Gary Christiansen. He used a blue felt cloth with hexes on it. Tod Kershner and Dale Wood hosted a couple French and Indian games using their Age of Reason rules (as yet unpublished). After lunch Bruce Bretthauer presented an impressive siege game using9mm figures. (A side note here - Christopher Duffy's Siege Warfare - Vol 2. is available for [30. I have not seen it yet, so I don't know how similar it is to his previous Fire andStone on similar subject matter.) Using a modified set of Koenig Krieg rules, Greg Novak ran a large 15mm game. Also in the huge game category, Rich Black hosted a 25mm game using the first edition version of my Tricorne rules with the "Milwaukee" amendments. Bill Protz and I squared off against each other with Bill's French triumphing. The rematch will be at Origins in Baltimore. The SYW Association's meeting has become an annual event with next year's tentatively set. Five dollars sent to Bill Protz at 5690 W. Glenbrook Road, Brown Deer, WI 53223 will bring membership and a year's subscription to the SYW Association's Journal. - KEN BUNGER GLEANINGSGame News (published monthly) $20.00 for 12 issues. Dept. K-30, 700 Orange St. POB 1992, Wilmington DE 109001992. This new magazine is basically just what it's title suggests; a bunch of reviews of recently released games and other products. In addition to (and often associated with) the reviews are scenarios giving examples of play in the games. Volume 1 issue 2 has a new Star Trek scenario, an ACW scenario for gaming with miniatures, and an interview with E. Gary Gygax of TSR. The reviews cover games not usually associated with wargamers. In this issue "British Rails" and "Empire Builder" railroad games are examined. Game news is nicely produced and put together. The reviews are short but thorough, and the price is reasonable. I hope it has more luck than some of the other game review magazines that have appeared and disappeared over the last few years. Empire, Eagles and Lions (published 8 times a year) $12.00 for 8 issues. RAFM Co., 19 Concession St., Cambridge Ontario Canada NIR 2G6. EE&L exists to provide a forum for discussion and debate on the military aspects of the Napoleonic period. A typical issue (#86) contains articles on army deployment, artillery and its application to wargames, French battalion columns by divisions (tactical uses of) and some notes on horse artillery. There is also uniform information on the French Royal Guard (1816), units of the Royal Sicilian Army and Saxon uniforms, 1813-1815. The use of primary sources and extensive bibliographies is the rule rather than the exception, and the level of historical research that backs up the writing is very high indeed. Lest you get the impression that this is a dry publication and of no interest to the average Napoleonic gamer, let me assure you that EE&L has an extensive wargames section and a figure review column. Many of the editors of EE&L and several of its more distinguished contributors, are currently working on a set of 15mm Napoleonic rules that will incorporate much of the research on Napoleonic warfare that has been discussed and debated in the magazine over the past several years. I'm looking forward to the publication of these rules with a great deal of anticipation. EE&L is not to be missed. THE TRI-STATE GAMERS (Published Quarterly) $5.00 for 4 issues, 2101 Ekin Avenue, New Albany IN 47150. A newsletter to encourage gaming of all sorts in the Tri-State area (Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio for those who weren't sure). The newsletter will provide an information network for gamers as well as sponsor and assist in conventions, auctions, tournaments and demonstration games. The premier issue has several game reviews, a couple of articles on miniature gaming and a couple of pieces for beginners on painting figures and buying computers. To meet its primary function (as a gamer's resource) the editor, Don Swartz, plans several new sections for the newsletter in the future. Garners in the tri-state area should consider supporting Don by sending in articles and reviews of interest. Regional newsletters have been very successful in other parts of the country. With the assistance of the gamers it supports, the Tri-State Gamer should also do well. The Courier Dispatch News of the hobby.
