Lost Worlds

Fantasy Combat System

Reviewed by Mark Swanson

This Fantasy Combat System, by Alfred Leonardi is published by Nova Game Designs, Inc. at $11.95 for two characters. This game system supports "man to man" skirmishes using a relative of Nova's ACE OF ACES combat system. The current four characters are all based on Rai partha figures: a swordsman, skeleton, dwarf and goblin.

To play, each player chooses a maneuver for each round. The two moves determine results: both wounds and limits on which maneuvers can be chosen next turn. Thus, an off balance character cannot do a normal attack the next turn. Each character has its own advantages in combat, apparently based on weapon type and assumed size and strength.

LOST WORLDS seem a good game to play while travelling or to pass the time, but is not interesting enough if you can play something else. The rules are simple and easily played but the subtle interactions give the advantage to an experienced player or one who can outguess an opponent. The fights last only a few minutes each and do not require much record keeping or any figures. I prefer ACE OF ACES, but LOST WORLDS is closer to the usual interests of readers of THE COURIER as the booklets can be used to simulate one-on-one combat for "skirmish" Medieval and/or ancient period games.
