Mike's Models

25mm Pike and Shot

Reviewed by Nick Nascati

For those of you interested in the earlier part of the Pike and Shot era, specifically for Italian Wars of the early 16th century, these new releases by Mike's Models should make you happy. I received for review 4 figures and 2 horses as follows:

    RP 161 Crossbowman
    RP179 Genitor
    RP164 Unarmored Pikeman
    R416 Gendarme Horse in Armor
    RP171 Gendarme in Maximillian Armor
    RH8 Stradiot/Genitor Horse

The Crossbowman is a very nice piece, unusually energetic for the scale, running forward, presumably skirmishing with a "Forlorn Hope". The unarmored pikeman, seems to have exceptionally long arms, presumably to fit in all the detail. The face has a lot of character for 15mm. The gendarme and armored horse are a pair, and a fine one too, The gendarme is arrayed in well-defined, classical armor, lance upright. The horse is quite well executed, very well proportioned, with the cloth comparison peeking out beneath the armor plating. The genitor; I will give Mike's Models the benefit of the doubt on this one, and assume that I got a bad casting. The detail is ill defined, and casting quality is poor. In fact, the arm holding the javelin, is attached to the shield only, a glob of solder representing the arm. The sword scabbard is only half cast - come on Jay, you can do better than this one! The horse is good though a bit chunky, it resembles a 28mm Hinchliffe horse.
