Colonial Rules:

The Sword and the Flame

A Review by Ian Knight

Rules authored by Larry V. Brom.

New to wargaming? Like to try the Colonial period but not sure where to begin? Then these rules are for you. It is the author's avowed intent to 'create a playable, fun-filled, entertaining game that will capture the flavour....of those stirring 'Days of Empire" and to that end he includes all the information likely to be of use to the beginner. There are brief historical scenarios (generally accurate, though the map of Zululand has some odd features!), painting guides, scenery tips, the rules themselves and an account of a trial game. Generally, all this is basically sound, and will be a God-send to the newcomer trying to leech military details from weighty Victorian tomes.

The rules themselves are designed to be fought with the basic units described in the text, and fall somewhere between skirmish gaming and the ordinary mass-troop type. They include a straightforeword look at the fundamentals of movement, morale, firing and melee, plus some nice touches, such as a rule which enables the native player to extract information by torturing any European unlucky enough to fall into his hands! Experienced wargamers will probably find little new, but can, perhaps, learn something from the attitude that such games should above all be fun.

Nicely produced, with some attractive and informative line drawings. Recommended.
